Secure Back-ups and Speaking Computers
By Bob Kwater
This month the Dayton Microcomputer Association is trying something a little bit different. It has been quite a while since there has been more than one presenter at a meeting. This month DMA® will have two guest presenters at their general meeting on Tuesday June 29th at O'Leary Auditorium on the campus of the University of Dayton. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. with an abbreviated business meeting so as to allow the presenters more time. Topics for evening will range from a discussion about "the importance of backing up your data" to "speaking to your computer."
How important is your time? How important is your email or your digital photos? How about the data that may have taken you years to accumulate? The first guest of the evening will be Christopher Bomar, President of Boomarang Online Backup Service.
The fact is, most businesses and individuals "put their life on the line" everyday by not backing up their computers daily and worse, many never backup at all. Very few people backup their critical computer data daily, and even fewer take their backups offsite. Or if they backup, do they periodically test the backups to see if they could recover from a disaster?
Accidents will happen: natural disasters, viruses, human error, theft, lightning, power surges or equipment failure will eventually cause you to lose vital data. Losing these files can wipe out years of hard work in seconds! How long could your business survive without the critical computer data you use every day? Customer lists, accounts payable and receivables, payroll, taxes, client records...these are your most important assets!
You don't think data loss will severely impact you? THINK AGAIN. Small businesses are even more vulnerable to data loss than large corporations because they do not have the tools and resources to recover from the downtime caused by data loss. Sixty percent of businesses that suffer total data loss go out of business immediately or within 6-months! To reduce the severe financial impact of computer data loss, The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends encrypted off-site backups of critical computer data as the best way to reduce downtime after a disaster of any kind, especially natural disasters.
Boomarang™ provides secure, automatic, online backups for PC's, laptops and networked computers. You set it once then backups are started when your business is closed and the computer is not in use. Using your existing Internet connection, these files are transmitted to secure and redundant multi-million dollar data centers for safekeeping. Your data is always secure because Boomarang™ uses the same high-tech encryption (Triple DES) that your bank uses to protect your account information and passwords. Home, small and medium size businesses can now enjoy the same level of data security that banks and large corporations depend on but at a fraction of the cost of traditional tape or CD backup!
What is the best way of protecting yourself? Come to the DMA® meeting and find out or go to www.boomarangdbs.com for more information.
