License Plate Scanners

New cameras in police cruisers can analyze thousands of license tags a day, making finding stolen cars, felons, parking violations, or even drivers with suspended licenses or unpaid fines, much easier. Some local police departments are using them already. Expect them to be in wide-spread use soon. For more info, see this tutorial.

There are privacy concerns about this technology, as seen here and elsewhere.

Our presenter will be a representative from Genetec, discussing their AutoVu Sharp Network Based License Plate Reading system. Genetec is a pioneer in the physical security and public safety industry and a global provider of world-class IP video surveillance, access control and license plate recognition (LPR) solutions to markets such as transportation, education, retail, gaming, government and more.

Next Month: TBA

Golden Oldies

Image: Golden turntable Also, did you know that the DMA is approaching a third of a century? We didn't until Gary Turner mentioned it. And he should know since he's been here for most of that time.

So to celebrate, we are planning a Thirty Three and a Third party Saturday, September 12 at Thomas Cloud Memorial Park. Details are yet to be finalized but the plan is for a pot luck picnic, with DMA providing the hotdogs, hamburgers, condiments, and drinks. Tickets are $2 each in advance, or $5 at the event. We expect to have geocaching, a photo shoot, and other events. We'll be looking for folks to help with the planning committee so if you are interested, let Gary know.
