The Google Boys

Join us for popcorn and a movie: The Google Boys

In the late 1990s, Larry Page and Sergey Brin were two ordinary Ph.D. students at Stanford University - ordinary, that is, until they came up with one extraordinary idea.

This is the story behind the creation of Google. It started simply enough as a research project. But like so many Silicon Valley innovations, it quickly took on a life of its own. Larry and Sergey launched Google ahead of all other search engines with their radical use of web crawling and page ranking. Their unique approach to advertising turned the partnership into a multi-billion dollar enterprise. A simple idea, some cheap hardware, and a few Lego blocks became much more than a tool to search the web. This story is told by weaving interviews with Larry, Sergey, and industry innovators with explanations of the various Google technologies.

Join us for a relaxing evening and a mound of theater popcorn. Beverages are available for purchase in the lobby, or you may bring your favorite.

Golden Oldies

Image: Golden turntable Also, did you know that the DMA is approaching a third of a century? We didn't until Gary Turner mentioned it. And he should know since he's been here for most of that time.

So to celebrate, we are planning a Thirty Three and a Third party Saturday, September 12 at Thomas Cloud Memorial Park. Details are yet to be finalized but the plan is for a pot luck picnic, with DMA providing the hotdogs, hamburgers, condiments, and drinks. Tickets are $2 each in advance, or $5 at the event. We expect to have geocaching, a photo shoot, and other events. We'll be looking for folks to help with the planning committee so if you are interested, let Gary know.
