How to put a counter on your page hosted on dmapub

Revised Sept. 25 2004 when we upgraded from version 2.3 to 2.5. The documentation on this page will work for most cases, but see current documentation for complete details. Also added some new digit types.

This page has been accessed times. Note, the code to produce the count here is:

<IMG SRC="/cgi-bin/Count.cgi?ft=3|frgb=255;0;0|negate=t|md=6|dd=sbwm|sh=1|df=counter-page.dat">

The portions that are bold are required, except that you must replace counter-page with your login name. If the df= option is omitted, a random number will be generated. Or, you may specify a number to be displayed with the lit= option. Valid characters are the digits 0 through 9 and a, p, :, and -.

Breaking the code into it's options reveals:
ft=3 means use a frame 3 pixels thick. If you don't want a frame, use ft=0

frgb=255;0;0 specifies the color of the frame in decimal for the R, G, and B values. Alternately, frgb=ff0000 specifies the color of the frame in hex for the R, G, and B values. Although the counter program supports the option to use named colors, that option is disabled on dmapub.

negate=t means negate the colors of the image but not the frame. The normal colors for this style is white dots on a black background, as you can see in the examples below. Obviously, this is not normally required.

md=6 means maximum digits displayed will be 6.

dd=sbwm specifies the digit style sbwm. Select from list below.

sh=1 means show digits. Using sh=0 will display a 1x1 transparent gif instead of the count, but will still increment the counter.

df=counter-page.dat specifies the unique name of the file that maintains the count for this page. DMA(R) members use your login name here. For example, if your login name is johndoe, use df=johndoe.dat. Send E-mail to root when you wish to add a counter to your page. The counter file must be setup for you by a member of the root team.

Note that all options are separated by the pipe character "|". You may use the ampersand character "&" if you prefer. Also, note that the values 1, T, & Y all are equivalent, meaning true. Likewise, the values 0, F, & N all mean false.

See www.muquit.com/muquit/software/Count/Count.html for more detailed information about how to use the counter. Note, it is not required to download and/or install counter for web pages hosted here. Version 2.3 of Muhammad A Muquit's excellent program is already installed on dmapub. The additional information explains the various options available for the Count.cgi program.

We have several digits from which you may choose. Specify the digit style, named on the left in the examples below, that you want with the dd= value. Only a few of our digits currently support the time option. The following samples were collected from the huge collection at digitmania.
