TENTATIVE ONE TO TWO YEAR SCHEDULE:

First Meeting

Virtualization:   January 27, 2010.   This should not be considered a "beginner topic".   The purpose behind covering this topic first will be to provide those with systems capable of handling virtualization software the chance to install a product to allow for practicing the covered material.

Workstation / Desktop Systems Part-I

Windows XP:   February 24, 2010 and March 24, 2010.   The sessions will cover the basic installation, tuning, configuration and maintenance of Windows XP.

Ubuntu Linux:   April 28, 2010 and May 26, 2010.   The sessions will cover the basic installation, configuration and maintenance of Ubuntu Linux.   This specific distribution has been selected due to the number of individuals using it in the DMA Linux SIG, a great source of help and further information.

Windows Vista:   June 23, 2010.   The session(s) will cover the basic installation, configuration and maintenance of Windows Vista.   Expect the focus to be on the differences between Windows XP and Vista.

Fedora Core Linux:   July 28, 2010.   The session(s) will cover the basic installation, configuration and maintenance of Fedora Core Linux.   Expect time to be spent covering the differences between a Debian (Ubuntu) Linux based distribution and an RPM (Fedora) Linux based distribution.

Virtualization

VirtualBox:   August 25, 2010.   The session(s) will cover the basic installation of VirtualBox and the setup of virtual systems.
Virtualization allows a physical system (host) to allow one or more operating systems (guests) to run on one physical computer.   This ability is provided through the virutalization software, in this case VirtualBox.

VMWare Server:   September 29, 2010.   The session(s) will cover the basic installation of VMWare Server and the setup of virtual systems.
VMWare Server does the same overall job as VirtualBox. The differences between the two virtualization software packages will be discussed.

Workstation / Desktop Systems Part-II

Windows 7:   October 27, 2010.   The session(s) will be a peak at Windows 7, includingconfiguration, maintenance and nuances between Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Mepis Linux and CentOS:   December 29, 2010.   The session(s) will focus on the similarities of maintaining these systems when compared to Ubuntu Linux (Mepis Linux) and Fedora Core Linux (CentOS Linux).

Firewalls

IPCop:   January 26, 2011.   Installation, configuration and maintenance of IPCop firewalls.

SmoothWall:   February 23, 2011.   Installation, configuration and maintenance of SmoothWall firewalls.

Untangle:   March 23, 2011.   Installation, configuration and maintenance of Untangle firewalls.

Servers

Windows 2003 Server:   April 27, 2011 and May 25, 2011. Installation, configuration and maintenance of Windows 2003 Server.

Active Directory basics:   June 22, 2011 and July 27, 2011. The session(s) will cover the basic ideas behind Active Directory (AD), and how to use group policies (GPOs) to help manage AD.

Ubuntu Linux Server:   August 24, 2011 and September 28, 2011. Installation, configuration and maintenance of Ubuntu Linux Server system.   The default for Ubuntu Linux Server is to use a terminal.   Please be prepared to see / practice typing commands.

Windows 2008 Server:   October 26, 2011.   Installation, configuration and maintenance of Windows 2008 Server.   The session(s) will focus on nuances between the 2003 and 2008 AD environments.

CentOS Linux Server:   December 28, 2010.   Installation, configuration and maintenance of CentOS Linux Server.

Routers

FreeSCO:   January 25, 2012. Installation, configuration and maintenance of a FreeSCO router.

NOTES:   All topics are tentative and may have the order changed or be omitted from the tentative schedule completely.   The direction the core group (regular attendees) chooses to follow will rule.   Preparing and presenting this type of material is labor intensive.   Core group members possessing knowledge of these topics are encouraged to prepare and give presentations.   This will not be a requirement.

Remember the best way to learn material is to present the material or help present it. ^nbsp Group members are encouraged to help present the topics in the above schedule.
