DLUG Events of 2001 and earlier

Here are summaries of our events we had in 2000 and 2001. Our usual meeting time is 7 - 9 p.m. the third Thursday each month. All meetings are free and open to the public unless stated otherwise. See maps and cue sheets for directions.

Nov. 2001

VMware Demo

Dave Jones gave an excellent demo of installing and using VMware Workstation at our November meeting. The Workstation version of VMware allows you to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on one PC. The much less expensive Express version allows running a single copy of Windows 98 or ME. Being able to run both Linux and another OS simultaneously on the same PC opens amazing possibilities.

Oct. 2001

SmoothWall Demo

At our October meeting, we had about thirty people show up to see Mike Linden demonstrate how to install the SmoothWall webmanaged firewall, which is based on GNU Linux. The installation took about 15 minutes, or less. Then he proceeded to demonstrate some of the numerous configuration options.

In addition, Tony Snyder announced some job possibilities and Dave Lundy announced that the unixsig mailing list archives are now searchable on this site. As an extra bonus, the good folks at evolServ Technologies donated a Palm m100 as a door prize for one of our lucky attendees.

Sep. 2001

Installfest Sun. Sept. 9, 2001

We held another Installfest Sunday September 9, at 119 Valley St. from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. In addition to helping several users install, or configure Linux, we quickly devoured the delicious Dayton Pizza Factory pizza that GT ordered. This fest was definitely better attended than our last one. It does pay to advertise. :-)

Aug. 2001

Computerfest®

We once again manned a "Linux Playground" at the fall 2001 Computerfest® August 25 and 26. It was much larger than at previous shows and was a huge success. We had several talks scheduled both Saturday and Sunday which were well attended, in spite of not being listed in the show's seminar schedule.

Jul. 2001

Damian Conway

Damian Conway gave a very interesting presentation on using Perl to more simply|lazily manage|build web sites at the July 5 2001 Linux SIG meeting. That was after his presentation on Perl 6 Monday July 2 at Wright State University.

Jun. 2001

Installfest Sat. Jun. 23, 2001

Our last Installfest was on Saturday, June 23, at 119 Valley St. from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. Due to poor advertising on our part, and on very nice weather, we had a rather poor attendance. We'll be sure to do a better job of promoting the next Installfest.

Jun. 2001

Progeny

At our monthly meeting on June 7, Jason Cook demonstrated installing Progeny, a commercial release of the latest version of Debian Linux. In addition, Don Corbet announced a new business venture he is forming, and Hal Hansen asked for help installing an HP-UX system.

Mar. 2001

Installfest Sat. Mar. 24, 2001

We had our most recent Installfest on Saturday, March 24, at Sinclair Community College in the Physics Department's computer lab.

Thanks to Art Ross for making the arrangements and hosting this event.

Computerfest®

We had lots of interest in our "Linux Playground" at Computerfest® March 10 and 11, 2001.

Feb. 2001

Mutt

At our monthly meeting Feb. 1, Jason Cook discussed and demonstrated the Mutt e-mail client. His presentation can be seen here.

Also, we briefly discussed plans for our booth at the upcoming Computerfest®. Some members of CLUG will be joining us in our booth. Join the Computerfest(R) Linux booth planning mailing list to help, or just keep informed.

Cisco Systems

At Dayton Microcomputer Association's main meeting Tuesday, Feb. 27, Tim Peyton, Major Account Manager for Cisco Systems, Inc., gave an overview of VOIP, video and Integrated Data over the Internet. See www.dma.org/2001.02.html for details.

Jan. 2001

Larry Wall

About half a dozen of us went to Cincinnati to hear Larry Wall, the creator of the Perl programming language, speak at CLUG Monday, January 22. It was a packed house!

Nov. 2000

Installfest Sat. Nov. 4, 2000

Our last InstallFest was from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Sat, Nov. 4 at the beautiful Team Linux offices at 2750 Indian Ripple Rd, Beavercreek.

At our November meeting, we heard from Gary Turner and Dan Tasch about their trip to Linux Business Expo in Atlanta.

Oct. 2000

Firewall

At our main DMA® meeting Tuesday, October 31, Jason Cook discussed how to take any old machine you have lying around and turn it into a Linux based firewall. Jason said, "I'll be covering the basics of what you need to get up and running, some of the pitfalls, some of the cool stuff you can do. I'll be showing the tools for building and testing your firewall as well as some the other benefits of using Linux for this task."

Most of you who have attended more than one or two of our Linux meetings know that Jason is both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Linux. He's posted his slides here.

Dr. Larry Augustin spoke at Dayton

The Internet and the Future of Software Development

The Linux/Unix Special Interest Group of the Dayton Microcomputer Association was pleased to have Dr. Larry Augustin as a special guest speaker, October 9 at the Stebbins H.S. in Dayton, OH. This event was free and open to the public. We had a good turnout for the event.

Dr. Augustin is a native of Dayton, having graduated from Stebbins H.S. in 1980 before going on to get engineering degrees from Notre Dame and Stanford. He founded VA Linux in 1993 and his company set a stock market record on Dec. 9, 1999 when its Initial Public Offering gained almost 700% in a single day.

Prior to this event, Dr. Augustin was a guest on the Radio PC Review program on 1410 WING AM from 5-6 pm.

Thanks to Mike Wright for making the arrangements, and thanks to all who attended.
