December 2010December 16, 2010 meeting at RC146, W.S.U.Bryan Harris will give a presentation on Firesheep, including a bit on session cookies (the thing that makes firesheep possible), and discuss why it's not fixed yet. He has Firesheep running on his Linux box, and may talk about what it took to get it built on Linux. After our meetings, we adjourn to a local eatery. Please feel free to join us there even if you can't attend our meeting. Which one is normally determined during the meeting. Call GT at 313-BITS for the location. November 2010November 18, 2010 meeting at RC146, W.S.U.No topic had been set for this month's meeting. After our meetings, we adjourn to a local eatery. Please feel free to join us there even if you can't attend our meeting. Which one is normally determined during the meeting. Call GT at 313-BITS for the location. If you have any suggestions for topics, or would like to make a presentation, please send your ideas to the Linux-SIG-Planning team. October 2010October 21, 2010 meeting at RC146, W.S.U.Ken Phelps described and demonstrated his long and winding road to creating some Halloween fun using some Wii components. After our meeting, we adjourned to Milano's. If you have any suggestions for topics, or would like to make a presentation, please send your ideas to the Linux-SIG-Planning team. October 2010October 2, 2010 InstallFest+ at Sinclair Community CollegeOur next InstallFest+ (formerly known as InstallFest) will be held at Sinclair Community College, 444 West Third Street, Dayton, from 10 am–4 pm Saturday, October 2nd, 2010 in Building 5, Room 5043. Presentations of various topics will be held in a nearby room, including "Introduction to, & Using VirtualBox" by Jordan McCollum, "GNU Octave" by Richard Wills, and possibly others. Why Installfest+ instead of Installfest? Since Linux has become much easier to install over the past few years, we've decided to shift the emphasis away from just installing Linux. Sure, we'll help you do that if that's what you want. But most people can get it installed OK on their own these days, but sometimes find that they need help doing certain things (printing, scanning, connecting with other networked computers at home, playing music, etc., etc.) once it's installed. So we'll try to offer help in those areas. If you have a problem you want help with, bring your machine in and we'll help as best we can. Please let us know in advance what problems you need help with so we can attempt to be better prepared. There is no admission charge for this event, although parking in the above ground garage is $2. If you have unusual hardware (very new or very old PC, or system with something other than an Intel Pentium, Core 2, or AMD Athlon CPU such as Alpha, PowerPC (e.g. older Mac), Sparc, new Inel-based Mac, etc. or need specific help, please let us know in advance so we can try to be prepared to help you. Contact info is here. We had have help available for anyone wanting to setup MythTV. KnoppMyth or LinHES are probably the easiest way to do it, but there are several other ways. We will have copies of some of the more popular current distros such as Debian 5.0.6, Fedora 13, Ubuntu 10.04.1 & / or 10.10 beta, and others available. If you want a particular distro, please let us know at least a few days in advance. Here are driving directions for getting there from any direction. Once you're there, you may park on 4th St., or in the triangular parking lot B, located between West Fourth and West Fifth Streets under the walkway. Or park in garage A between West Fifth and Mead Streets and take the elevated walkway to ... There is a $2 charge to park in garage A, payable upon exit. Street parking is free on Saturdays. Please be aware that the parking in Lot C (under Buildings 11 & 12) costs $10! September 2010September 16 2010 meeting at RC146, W.S.U.No topic was scheduled for this month's meeting. GT had details of our next InstallFest+, which will be held Sat. Oct. 2 at Sinclair Community College. After our meetings, we adjourned to Milano's. 2010 Ohio LinuxFest at Columbus Convention CenterThe 8th annual Ohio LinuxFest was Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, OH. As it has been from its inception, Ohio LinuxFest is free, although advance registration is strongly recommended. If you would like to help keep it free, you may register as a Supporter and get a T-shirt & lunch, in addition to the warm and fuzzy feeling of helping. This year once again had an optional day of training on Friday, Sept. 10 for $350 and LPI testing on Sunday, Sept. 12. A new addition this year was UbuCon from 10am - 5pm Friday. August 2010August 19 2010 meeting at RC146, W.S.U.We just got word at 3:06pm Thur. Aug. 19, that we have RC146 for our meeting tonight and the rest of the term! So we'll hold our meeting tonight as usual at Wright State, then adjourn to Milano's, 2260 North Fairfield Rd., at the northeast corner of Kemp Rd. and N. Fairfield. That's about 1.7 miles south of the intersection of North Fairfield Rd. and Col. Glenn Hwy. (Nutter Center). See location on Bing maps. When going south on North Fairfield, it's easiest to turn left onto Lakeview Dr. (by Chick-Fil-A), then turn right just behind Chick-Fil-A, and follow the road, such as it is, to Minano's. I would have used Google Maps, but the location is more accurate on Bing. :-( The main topic of our August meeting is scheduled to be the ubiquitous text editor, vi. After our meetings, we adjourn to a local eatery. Please feel free to join us there even if you can't attend our meeting. Which one is normally determined at the meeting, but this month we know in advance it will be Milano's. July 2010July 15 2010 meeting at W.S.U., Russ Engineering, RC145No topic was scheduled for the July 2010 meeting. June 2010June 17 2010 meeting at W.S.U., Russ Engineering, RC145For our June meeting, Don Corbet (AKA The Linux Guy®) was scheduled to discuss certification and virtualization. I was unable to attend, so have no details to report. May 2010May 20 2010 meeting at W.S.U., Russ Engineering, RC145No topic was scheduled for the May 2010 meeting, so an extended Q & A session predominated the meeting. We adjourned early to Milano's, where there was considerable discussion about improving meetings. April 2010April 15 2010 meeting at W.S.U., Russ Engineering, RC145No topic was been scheduled for the April 2010 meeting. March 2010March 20 2010 InstallFest+ at Sinclair Community CollegeOur last InstallFest+ (formerly known as InstallFest) was held at Sinclair Community College, 444 West Third Street, Dayton, from 10 am–4 pm Saturday, March 20th, 2010 in Building 14, Room 312. Presentations of virtualization, and a comparison of Open Office to M$ Office, were held in a nearby room. Why Installfest+ instead of Installfest? Once you're there, you may park on 4th St., or in the triangular parking lot B, located between West Fourth and West Fifth Streets under the walkway. Or park in the east end of garage A between West Fifth and Mead Streets and take the elevated walkway to the second floor to building 14, then up the elevator to the 3rd floor to room 312. There is a $2 charge to park in garage A, payable upon exit. Street parking is free on Saturdays. Please be aware that the parking in Lot C (under Buildings 11 & 12) costs $10! March 2010March 18 2010 meeting at Student Union E163A (Discovery A), W.S.U.This was a very interesting evening! Matt Arnett showed us how to use Compiz to wow your friends and family and also make your system more productive and fun to use. He demonstrated many of the Compiz 8 categories and numerous highly configurable plug-ins. It's a tinkerer's dream! You can definitely use Compiz to pimp your OS. Matt also demoed setting up a Wii Remote to remotely control your Linux desktop (and not just for flipping through PowerPoint slides either)! With Compiz and a Wiimote, you can grab your screen with your hand (Wiimote) and spin it around like a Rubik's cube. You can also control the Wiimote from you desktop. Hmmm...sounds like the basics of a Wii gaming API are there for Linux, just waiting to be used. Matt's presentation was very enthusiastically received. Thanks, Matt! Matt is a Software Engineer from Cintas Corporation, with over 15 years of experience in designing and developing client/server web enabled software. He has been using Ubuntu Linux for the last 3 years and Red Hat Linux for the last 6 years. We adjourned to Milano's for food, drink, and much more discussion. February 2010February 18 2010 meeting at Student Union E156A (Endeavour A), W.S.U.No topic was scheduled for this month. January 2010January 21 2010 meeting at Student Union E163B (Discovery B), W.S.U.This month, Bryan Harris did an introductory presentation on Sandisk U3 "thumb drives" and discussed configuring them as a bootable Linux system. See an overview here. This may be the start of a three or more parts series.
GT had an update on our next Install / Config Fest, scheduled for 10am - 4pm Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Sinclair Community College. He is seeking volunteers to help with:
Is there any interest in starting a Droid SIG? At least three of our members now have cell phones based on the Android OS. December 2009December 17 2009 meeting at RC144, W.S.U.This month, Jordan McCollum did a presentation on setting up and using VirtualBox. There was yet more discussion of scheduling an Install / Config Fest, but no date or location has been set. Why does this seem to be harder to do than nailing Jello to a tree? Is there any interest in starting a Droid SIG? At least three of our members now have cell phones based on the Android OS. | |||
