From the Chair / Computerfest® Spring 2003

by Randal Young, Computerfest® Spring 2003 Chair

By the time you read this, another spring Computerfest® show will have come and gone and plans for the fall 2003 event will be underway. This last Computerfest® had many successes on lots of different levels, from personal goals achieved by various staff members, to more global initiatives such as the school program and public relations projects; from an outstanding feature such as the Hubble Space Telescope presentation to the great strides in the IT/networking development of the show. Perhaps the biggest validation that our show is on the right track comes from knowing that Computerfest® is the only show of its kind that demonstrated any increase at all in attendance. Not only did we have an increase, but the increase was nearly 30% from Fall 2002. This was accomplished in the face of a very shaky geo-political situation in the Middle East (war broke out 3 days later) and a continuing slow economy.

Computerfest® continues to have major challenges that must be addressed. These challenges are being met and overcome in the future because of the commitment to the ongoing evolution of the event by the entire DMA® organization. Evolving this event into a first class computer, technology and information show will increase the audience that will be attracted to Computerfest® in the future. A few attendees of course grumbled about the show not being what it was before (an observation that was greeted with great joy for those of us working to evolve it). Many more new attendees however commented about how they were amazed and thrilled at the huge scope of activities and the wide range of information now available at an event in this region of the country. One user group leader from out of town remarked to me that he told members of his organization that they would have to travel all the way to Chicago, New York, or Las Vegas to see anything close to this kind of event.

All of this is not possible without the tremendous effort and support of such a committed group of friends known as the Computerfest® staff. We were delighted in the many new faces on the staff this time out and will continue to reach out to more folks who might be interested in joining the family. I want to take this opportunity to thank all those on the staff for their outstanding efforts and contributions, the magnitude of which could not possibly fit in the space available in this issue. It would literally take volumes to adequately describe all the individual and group contributions. I was indeed blessed to have been fortunate enough to be the chair of such a wonderful group of folks. You can't possibly know without joining the group yourself just how much fun, and how dynamic, this organization is. I encourage each of you reading this to consider getting involved. You won't regret it. Now is the time to get started and ask about joining the staff and finding what area might be of interest to you. Contact Gary Mullins and David Thomas, the co-chairs of the upcoming fall show, and let them know that you're interested. They'll work with you to find a place for you.

Once again, I thank all those on the staff for all their contributions and efforts, and I look forward to the bright future Computerfest® will enjoy.
