NASA Speaker Addresses Schools

by Millard Mier III

As part of DMA®'s continued support of local schools, Computerfest® made available its special guest speaker, Inge Heyer of NASA's Space Telescope Science Institute, to address students at local schools. Over 30 schools in the Dayton area were approached by volunteers Darlene Sye, Gail Young, George Ewing and Millard Mier III. Schools were chosen based on their physical location. The final selection was on a first come, first served basis. The schools selected to have Inge address their students were: Beavercreek High School, Fairborn High School, Kettering Middle School, Miamisburg High School, Oakwood High School and Trotwood-Madison High School.

Inge gave a slide show and lecture titled "A Journey Through Space With The Hubble Space Telescope" which displays Hubble photographs showing the wealth of objects in our Universe, the processes they undergo, and the relationships between them. She presented to student groups ranging from astronomy clubs, gifted science students, and even a 700-student general assembly. At some schools, she met with students afterwards in smaller focus groups. Her lecture was captivating and was greatly appreciated at every school she visited.

Inge is a senior data analyst with the Hubble Space Telescope at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, MD. She was in Dayton as a guest of Computerfest® where she presented a total of four presentations on Space and Space Exploration. Inge works on images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide-Field and Planetary Camera 2. She participates as a volunteer in the Space Telescope's educational and public outreach program, and gives presentations about Hubble's achievements at conventions throughout the United States as well as in Europe. She is a member of the Enterprise Team and has participated in the program at the US Space Academy three times. She enjoys talking about astronomy and space science and her lectures were extremely well attended at Computerfest®.
