DMA® Elections ‑ Candidate Statements

A note from your Editor regarding Nominee Qualification Statements:

The nominees' Board of Trustees candidate statements which follow have not been subjected to my usual editing scrutiny aside from adding in, as needed, those pesky (& symbols that people constantly forget to put in after DMA®and Computeriest®. They are otherwise reproduced exactly as I received them, either from the Nominations Committee Chairman, Bob Kwater, or directly from the nominees themselves (and as copied to the Committee).

Final responsibility for ensuring candidate statements meet all nomination requirements rests with the Committee. What is presented here represents the latest communications from them regarding each statement.

The order of the statement placements is purely last‑name alphabetical and, just as with the space‑filling graphic on p. 19, nothing herein should be construed in any way, shape or form as indicating a preference for any nominee(s).

We again this year have a healthy slate of candidates to present. It's great to see seven nominees running for the three openings on the Board of Trustees. They offer themselves here for your consideration and would most certainly appreciate your attendance at the September General Meeting and your participation in the voting process.

George Gibbs, Acting co‑Editor

This year we have a slate of nominees that run the gamut from those with membership of 20 years or more to those new to DMA® Experience ranges from the very technical to the home user. With only three positions open and seven people from which to choose, you, the membership, must weigh the selection carefully. DMA® is at a transitional phase, as is the industry in general, and hard choices will need to be made in the coming year. It truly has been encouraging to see that so many individuals are willing to use their time and energy to help make DMA® better.

Thank you to all the nominees, and to Millard Mier and Susan Kendall without whose assistance this selection would not have been possible.

Bob Kwater Nomination Chairman

Dale Childs
I have been a computer owner and user since 1979. With experience on various PC clones and Apple systems, I find it easy to "speak" understand both environments, and conclude that there is no one system better than the next.

No sooner did I move to Dayton in 1982, 1 quickly joined and became involved with Apple‑Dayton, DMUG, as well as DMA®. As a long time user group member I maintain the belief that user groups are first created for the support of its members and secondly for the community.

While active in the Digital Photography and Software Development SIGs, I have been interested in expanding DMA® Special Interest Groups. To this degree I have assisted my wife (Lou) begin the Digital Textiles SIG.

Since retiring from the Air Force and now employed at Lexis‑Nexis my education and work emphasis is Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering with interests in Avionics and Artificial Intelligence.

I hope to bring my technical expertise and business skills to service the Board of Trustees and DMA® in general wherever I can help.

Terry Drill
I am a co‑founder of the Northern SIG, a Special Interest Group that has just celebrated its first year anniversary this month. I have also co‑chaired the Computerfest® ‑ IT position for Computerfest® for the Spring 2003 and Fall 2003 shows with responsibility of building and maintaining the network used during the show.

Presently I am a student at Edison Community College having completed 97 credit hours in 6 semesters towards three Information Technology degrees (AAB) among these credit hours is the completion of the Cisco CCNA track at a Cisco Network Academy. At the end of this year, I hope to transfer to a four‑year program to continue my studies of Business and Information Technology.

Other accomplishments in technology include having held a Novice Amateur Radio License when I was 15. 1 studied closed circuit television at Montgomery county JVS during my sophomore and senior years of High School. I served six years as an electronic warfare technician in the US NAVY where I obtained the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. I have also completed an AAS degree from Rets Tech in Electronic Engineering.

I enjoy working with those interested in learning today's new technology. It would be an honor to serve on the board of the DMA® to help bring this organization further along in its travels to introduce and help teach others the use of technology. In addition, as a relative newcomer to DMA®, I can look at things with a fresh eye and an open mind not encumbered by the past.

Why do I feel I am qualified for this position? I feel that my experience and ability to make authoritative decisions will be a benefit to the Board. My workings with other groups provide me with a perspective that can be very beneficial in being a Team Player and Leader on the Board.

If elected, I would assist and support the Organization in growth as well as work with fellow Trustees in areas needed to ensure the well being of the Organization and to support the Board in its goals.

Robert K. Ruby II
Bob is always willing and able to assist the DMA® by way of recruiting. He cofounded the NorthernSIG with Terry Drill. By Volunteering, he was co-chair of the IT/Networking committee for Computerfest® (Spring and Fall 2003). And by serving as ambassador to the public at large, Bob is an IT instructor at Edison College, where he actively promotes the DMA®'s principles of Informing and Educating the public about current technology.

He was originally asked to help bring the Computerfest® IT/Networking area into the present and to prepare for the future. He developed a strong working relationship with not only the Computerfest® staff but with Gemair the Board of Trustees as well.

Learning that there were individual interested in meeting to discuss computing but not able to drive the distance to Dayton, he envisioned beginning the NorthernSIG. The drive and enthusiasm Bob shares inspires those around him to become a part of the future of the whole organization. Join Bob in his efforts to provide longstanding future leadership to assist the DMAV in upholding the belief that technology is meant to be shared and that you can contribute by sharing your experiences with someone less experienced.

Darlene Sye
Darlene has been an active member of DMAO since 1992. She has worked hard on the Computerfest® Committee for several years, and has served as Secretary of Computerfest® for two shows. In addition she has worked on the Computerfest® Booth and in the Exhibitor Office. More recently, Darlene has taken her love of Geneology and added it to one of the features of the Computerfest® seminars. Darlene has plans to lead in the development of a Geneology SIG for DMA®.

Darlene has worked with Sinclair Community College as a technical trainer and is currently working with Siemens. She has been a leader in bringing training to the underserved and believes in improving access to technology to all those interested in the benefits technology provides.

She sees the difficulties that face DMA® at this time as more of a challenge than a barrier to growth. Not one to sit back and watch others work, Darlene is eager to "roll up her sleeves" to help where needed.

Gary Turner
The office of Trustee is an important one and I promise to do my best. I have been a member of DMA® since its creation and have held various offices in the organization including Trustee for the past three years, four years as President, four years as Vice‑President, Chairman of Computerfest® two plus times, President and Vice President of GEMAIR, and current Ticket Chair for Computerfest® 2003.

New technology is bringing change and the club is changing to reflect the needs of its members. Only by changing, can the club fulfill its purpose of educating its members and the public while keeping pace with the newest computing technologies.

I believe with my history in DMA® and my knowledge in the computing field I can help direct DMA® to a successful future.

Ron Williamitis
I am a Dayton native who has been in the Dayton work force for over 23 years. I have served in officer positions in various service clubs and organizations during this time.

I am known both in the business community and by the governmental officials. Since I have worked in the law and financial fields, I feel that I can offer my knowledge and creativity in clarification of either legal or financial matters as needed.
