What is this SIG?

Who are We?

The DMA® Digital Photography SIG was begun in January 2003 and exists to assist digital photographers with their craft. We hold a monthly meeting with scheduled topic, and then break off into small groups to discuss whatever is of interest. Our members vary tremendously in interests and skills. We have professional photographers, amateurs who are just transitioning to digital media, beginners who are just starting out, and even members who are still waiting to purchase their first digital camera. Areas of interest include still photography, photo editing, digital video, scanning of photos, restoration of damaged photos, rescuing of bad photos, transferring analog (VHS, 8-mm, Hi-8) video to digital, printing techniques, buyers guides and so much more There is something for every skill and interest level!

Since we began we have covered Photoshop Elements, Paint Shop Pro, Moviemaker II, Buying Your First Camera, Digital Printing Options, Buzzwords (or What Did The Salesman Say?), VCD slideshows, and computer based slideshows, and much more. At this time, our meetings are primarily digital darkroom techniques, but we hope to find a second leader who would be interested in teaching the camera side of photography.

Our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm. Please see our events page for the location of any particular meeting. Feel free to contact us by email or call Dave Lundy at (937) 426-1132. Thanks trendously to Joseph Solch who served admirably as our interim SIG leader during Millard's adventure in India.

Persons wanting to learn more about the actual photography aspect of digital photography (actually taking the picture, and how to get the best shot in a particular situation by selecting vantage point, lighting, shutter speed, aperture, etc.) may want to check out Dayton Tripod Camera Club which meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of most months, or the Focus Photo Club which meets the first Thursday most months.

We're one of several Special Interest Groups (SIGs) of Dayton Microcomputer Association (DMA®). The SIG was started by Millard Mier III, who has since moved on to other things. Nancy Christolear, who was the DMA® SIG liaison when Millard left, is serving as leader for now, but if you're interested, please contact the DMA® vice president, who serves as SIG liaison.

Our first meeting was Thursday, January 2, 2003 in the training center at CompUSA, Miamisburg, OH, and we blew the doors off! Attendance was much higher than anticipated and it was standing room only before the meeting even started. We then moved our meetings to Wright State University, Fairborn, OH, but due to increased enrollments (good for them, but bad for us) they no longer had a room available for us, so we moved to 119 Valley St., effective Aug. 24, 2006. Effective Dec. 28, 2006 we're back at Wright State University. Please check our events page for current meeting info. These meetings are open to anyone interested in photography and computers and we welcome both the experienced and inexperienced user. You need not be a member of DMA® to attend but if you like what you see and hear, we hope you will consider joining. Dues are only $25.00 a year and not only entitle you to a year's subscription to the DMA® publication The DataBus and eligibility to win valuable door prizes at DMA's main monthly meeting, and entitles you to some great benefits, including discounts, but gives you access to a group of enthusiastic digital camera, scanner, and digital photo editor users who are always willing to listen to your ideas and help solve your problems.
