August 2009

August 27, 2009: "Geotagging" at Belmont Branch of Dayton Public Library, 1041 Watervliet Ave.

This month Dean Miller demonstrated some uses for geotagging photos. Geotagging is a process of recording geographic coordinates (latitude & longitude) in a photo's metadata - typically in either the Exchangeable image file format (EXIF) or Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) format. This can be done automatically when the photo is taken if the camera has the capability, or added later using specialized software. Dean's camera can automatically geotag photos when his GPS receiver is attached and turned on. He has also geotagged photos using software he will demo. Dave has geotagged several photos using Flickr, which you can see here. When you click one of the geotaged photos, it will display where the photo was taken on Google Maps. Dave also showed some photos of the Gemwood Horse Trials a few weeks ago, and some of the "Monet by Moonlight" from last weekend.

If you have any suggestions for future topics, or would like to do a presentation, please contact us.

January 24, 2008: "HDRI" at 160 Rike Hall, W.S.U.

This month we discussed HDRI and demonstrated a couple inexpensive HDRI programs, Dynamic-Photo HDR, and Photomatix. HDRI is a process used to create photos that more closely resemble what we see than can be achieved by traditional film or digital photography. The human eye can see a much wider range of light intensity than any currently available camera can with a single exposure. The HDRI process involves taking two or more photos of the same scene at various exposure values (typically at least one underexposed, one "properly" exposed, and one over exposed) and combining them with specially designed software to create a composite of the various exposures that looks more like what our eyes see.

November 29 (postponed a week due to Thanksgiving), 2007: "Favorite Photo Sharing Sites" at 225 Allyn Hall, W.S.U.

This month we'll talk about our favorite photo sharing web sites. Dave will talk about Flickr.com that he's been using for several months and briefly discuss Picasa Web Albums if nobody else does. Other sites include dotPhoto, Kodak Gallery, Shutterfly, SmugMug, Snapfish, Webshots, and many more. Some are primarily for sharing photos with friends and family, while others are much better suited for professional photographers to sell their photos. Please be prepared to talk a little about one or two of your favorite sites and why you like them. We will have Internet access, thanks to the very generous donation of a Clearwire account and wireless modem by Jeremiah Ilges of The Ohio Technology Group in Springfield. This will allow us to demonstrate some of the neat features of various sites.

January 2007

January 25, 2007: "Infrared Photography & HDR with Qtpfsgui" at 206 Fawcett Hall, W.S.U.

Nancy talked a bit about Infrared photography with Digital Cameras, and showed a few web sites with sample photos. Some cameras can be used without modification. If your camera isn't one of those, one site offered step by step instructions for modifying a camera for infrared photography and another site will do the modification for you for $200 to $350, depending on camera. In general, infrared photography will require the use of an infrared filter to block most visible light, and rather long exposures, requiring the use of a tripod. In exchange, you can get some very interesting and surrealistic photos. She also demonstrated creating High Dynamic Range Images with the free program Qtpfsgui. HDRI is a process of combining at least two differently exposed photos of the same scene and combining them using software to display a wider dynamic range than is possible in a single exposure with currently available cameras. There are a couple example HDR photos on the Qtpfsgui site, but there are many more excellent examples here. We started a monthly photo challenge this month. Our theme was winter scene photos. We'll have a different theme each month.

Sites Nancy used in her infrared presentation were:

A first-time visitor, Mike Scarberry, showed us a couple of his photos that he has posted since to our theme page. We showed the few photos that have been posted so far, including a lovely palm tree in Texas. ;-). Dave Lundy showed some of his photos from Hamilton Ohio's 2005 IceFest, Cox Arboretum's luminary walk, and Beavercreek Wetlands. He also shared news of a new ultra zoom camera, the Olympus SP-500 UZ that was just announced. It's the first camera in its class with an 18x (28 - 504mm equivalent) optical zoom range. See the imaging-resource.com or dpreview.com articles.
