Amateur Radio and Computers SIG, part of Dayton Microcomputer Association,
meets the first Tuesday of every month at the DMA/OTAP facility on Valley
Street in Dayton. Meeting time is 7:00 pm.
This month we will be looking at some new and some old technology. By
popular request, I will bring an Echolink station to the meeting so we can
take a peek at this interesting and sometimes controversial part of ham
radio. I already opened the ports to allow the "signals" to flow thru the
Internet, and will be happy to explain what Mike Carr (OTAP) and I did to
make this happen. If you attended the DARA meeting last Friday, I can
elaborate and explain the difference between UDP, TCP, and IP. Plus I will
be glad to go further into the world of H.323 vs SIP (voice over IP
protocols) and why Echolink insists you need to root around inside of your
router.
I will also describe what you need to hook into my brand new Winlink
gateway. Located in Kettering near Indian Riffle Park on Stroop, I have a
Winlink Telpac station running at my house. It is not quite up to snuff,
since my TNC died, but I have a functional setup using a Kenwood D-700
mobile rig. Once I get my TNC fixed or replaced, it will offer reliable
e-mail connectivity and will be a useful asset to anybody in southern
Montgomery, western Greene, and northern Warren County as a direct
connection to Internet e-mail. From bare bones Hyperterminal, to a fully
functioning Paclink system, you can start using this system today (bearing
in mind that it is slightly dysfunctional for the time being).
Shawna Collins N2TUJ will have the latest computer news including updates
from Apple and Microsoft (the good, the bad and the ugly).
We will also discuss the ramifications of the change in Daylight Savings
Time (yes, there are ramifications!)
If you have a portable high power packet station, please bring it along. I
can't hit Kettering from Valley Street with my HT (think 5 watts and a
valley, not a good combo) but if we can figure out a way to get a signal to
my house we can do a demo. And since this is a user's group and not a
lecture series, bring questions, topics, equipment, whatever, and we can
apply the wide range of group talents to answering your questions and
solving your problems!
DMA is located at 119 Valley Street. Call 937-545-7015 for directions or
e-mail toddc at woh.rr.com for help.
See you Tuesday!
