Genealogy Meeting 27 July Canceled

I am sorry to have to send out this message canceling the DMA Genealogy SIG Meeting for this month, but I think it is highly inappropriate for me to be calling a meeting without the leader's consent. I have not been able to talk to her since last Thursday when she told me that meetings were taking a hiatus for the summer. We agreed to have a chat this past week and it has not happened yet. And she gets the key; so if we all show up down there and cannot get into the conference room, I will be the one at fault. And as gasoline prices have risen, I doubt that anyone wants to drive all the way down there to discover that we cannot have the meeting for lack of the key (I may have to join DMA yet in order to qualify for borrowing a key to the headquarters).

Sorry if I got anyone all excited and looking forward to a meeting.

Now, since we are not having one, I direct you to look at the latest announcement of the forthcoming monthly meeting of the Montgomery County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society (I approved this note for posting but do not see it on the posting board so I am reposting it as part of this note as it was sent to me):

"Greetings DMA Genealogy SIG members:

I would like to congratulate Jay on a great description of the MCC-OGS meeting and the additional information provided.

I also agree that the membership fee is a true bargain.
(All memberships expire in December).

There are other benefits of membership in the MCC-OGS (Montgomery County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society).

Once a year, members are allowed to submit a list of all surnames and locations they are researching.

All 200 Plus members can view this list and help each other (especially if they are researching the same surnames or are familiar with the locations).

Once a year, members bring in examples of their research.
This may be a completed book on one or more of their surnames.

It may be samples of photography they have encountered.
It may be samples of their methods of record keeping.
It could be many different things that would be of help to other members.

The presentations at the meetings are especially helpful to me.
They present tips, tricks, hints, guidelines and other aids that I can use in my own research. It is better to see samples and pictures than to just read an article on the subject. These presentations are sometimes very helpful in getting around a roadblock in your research.

The meeting starts with a short presentation topic at 1:00 PM.
Next is a business meeting that normally lasts about 20 minutes.

Then 10 minutes of cookies and coffee.

The main topic usually starts at about 2:00. It lasts approximately 1 hour.

The meetings are in the second floor auditorium of the main library (Dayton Metro Library) in downtown Dayton ( 215 E. 3rd St ).

(You do NOT have to be a member to attend the meetings)

I will be presenting a very visual slide show on "Using Maps in Genealogy Research" at the August 12 meeting.

This presentation will use A LARGE number of map samples and how they can assist you in your research.

The emphasis will be on:
(1) how the maps can lead to new locations to search for records,
(2) how the maps can help narrow down a large search area, and (3) how and where maps can be found and bought.

If time permits, I will present
(1) online sources of maps,
(2) how to read the maps to find locations and
(3) what to look for when buying a map.

Check out the MCC-OGS website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohmontgs/.

Mike Kennedy"

I would also like to note that the website has been updated since I was on it a couple of days ago and the Pre-Meeting Topic is now listed: How to Use Heritage Quest.
