Hello Everyone,
It's good to see the discussion on the list and to at least know that people
are out there listening. From the various postings one question comes to
mind: Does the group exist to serve full time programmers or
part-time/enthusiast/hobbyist programmers? Or is it both? Or are they
different? I think in the past, we have focused more on people doing full
time development, and on topics that were relevant to that audience. But
hearing some of the messages, I think that might not be the right focus.
What does everyone lese think?
Another thing I would like to see this group strive for is being open to all
technologies. When we changed the group into the Software Development SIG,
we were intentionally trying to open the group up. However, this does not
mean we will never talk about proprietary technology. Many of us work with
tools and languages from Microsoft, Borland and others. And I think there
is a lot to be gained from discussion of these tools. For example, it was
quite a surprise to me to learn that Delphi application were "standalone,
native compiled, GUI 'panel apps', that is rapidly shrinking in importance
and need by the day.". I used Delphi for many years, and it has probably
been five or six years since I've written a GUI application with Delphi. I
have written a lot of web sites and web service applications. And as for
the GUI applications, I would say there are many instances where they would
have served user needs far better than web sites, and I think the pendulum
is swinging back in that direction (i.e. Microsoft smart client
applications).
A group like this demands a certain amount of openness from participants. I
think it would be just as big a mistake to exclude proprietary tools, GUI
tools, etc. as it would be to exclude open source tools. I would like to
see everything included. And I would like to have a group where we can hear
a variety of different opinions and talk about them openly.
And to show you how much I mean it, I would even be willing to entertain
discussion about the positive traits of classic VB. <g>
Anyway, I hope you all will come to the meeting this Thursday (April 14,
6:30) to talk about what we should be doing as a group. Or send an e-mail
to the list. Or do both.
Joe
