Bryan,
Well, I guess we never met, considering the time elements.
I began attending a few sessions ago.
Someone introduced the idea of doing a project using Ruby.
I didnt care about the project, but did get interested in Ruby, bought the
book and played with the language a bit.
Mostly because it was supposed to be a true OOPS language like Smalltalk.
Plus the idea that it is essentially an interpreted language capable of
self-reference as instruction and data. Maybe sort of like Lisp? Or like
Forth (yeh, a threaded language).
I was quite for the first few sessions, but the last one I got kinda
talkative. Maybe because the other talkative one went quite. Anyway, we
seemed to have a hell of a good time, putting our stuff on the table and
discussing a lot of things. 'Bonding' I guess they call it.
The more experienced guys made some interesting observations more on a
philosophical level perhaps, which I quite enjoyed.
Im the old guy, I suspect the oldest in the group. Sort of balding, northern
european ancestry, too soft-spoken and struggle to be heard. Bearded.
Have sensitive hearing and my mouth is too close to my ears so hurts when I
speak up. Considered wearing ear plugs, always helps.
Seems we should re-introduce ourselves again at the meeting Thursday night.
I never remember names.
Isnt Keith's last name Wire? I thought he was the one from up north.
Gee, how embarrasing. Name tags, anyone? Especially for the benifit of we
geezers?
Hey, thanks for the URL to the forum! Never saw that before, although been a
member for a long time off and on. Will probably make use of it, have a lot
of damn fool questions to ask. Like, my spell checker doesnt work on this
Outlook Express email tool, but works okay on Word. Have no idea how to fix
it, and have a revulsion for anything involving how the MicroSoft people
think. Will float that on the forum.
You dont read minds" Dang. But I dont either.
And you are quite correct, we need to ask questions in order to learn.
I guess that is the thing I need to resolve. Been retired for a number of
years, dont have to maintain appearances. So, will be asking damn fool
questions more and more as I slip towards the great void.
I think I will try to hang in with this group now. I did attend it years ago
when it was mostly interested in Clipper, Delphi, VB etc. My attendance
slipped off gradually. In retrospect I now realize how much I loathed that
stuff! Should have stayed with embedded systems design.
This most recent incarnation of the group looks interesting, there may be a
chance to explore different ideas. If it gets too specific and, what is the
word, arcane?, then I will turn to more interesting things elsewhere.
But hopefully with a looser and more wide-ranging discussion such as we had
last time the meetings would be something I would look forward to.
Mike
