No doctrinal differences between versions?

Just recently, Sunday night, May 18, 1997, I reading through the standard SBC Sunday School material (in an attempt to sleep), when I was shocked to read the "evangelical" New International Version (NIV) rendering of
Romans Chapter Eight, Verse 9:
NIV
You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.
KJB
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
As one person commented to me: [This rendering] is purely a committee thing to foster the religious-sounding idea that God wants to control us and so to be good Christians we want God to control us. Many preachers... and a lot of literature, support the phrase "let Jesus take control of your lives."

Sometimes the differences are very subtle. Even punctuation, a comma, can make a grave difference in interpretation.

Hebrews Chapter Ten, Verse 12:
Rheims-Douay
But this man, offering one sacrifice for sins, for ever sitteth on the right hand of God,
KJB
But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
