Pfaff 2144 Tips and Tricks

Updated July 15, 2004

This is progressive as I get more familiar with the machine.

Treading and the Pressure Plates

The initial threading must be done with the pressure plates open. They are open when the presser foot is up. Also they are open when you get the message to change tread color when embroidering. They are closed when the presser foot is down and when you press OK after an embroidery thread change. Only thread the needle when the pressure plates are closed.

Automatic Thread Cutter

This feature can be turned on or off. The machine must be carefully adjusted by the dealer to ensure the tread stays in the needle. It is suppose to stay and allow immediate sewing again. Even when adjusted it doesn’t always work

Two things are important:

  1. Always completely rethread the machine if the tread does not stay for the next sew. The Pfaff is critical about having the tread in the pressure plates properly.
  2. Even when it is working OK, it is a good idea to turn the automatic cutter off when embroidering with the same color between several sections. It is better to clip a few threads than to rethread after every automatic tread cut when the tread does not stay. Some ready-done designs have the automatic tread cutting programmed into their stitching. I downloaded a Pfaff design that used about twenty for a color.

Spool Placements

Thread feed from the three spool positions are less than ideal. The vertical post can get rapped with thread and cause breakage. Some spools have ragged edges. A tip is to place a small winged paper clip at the middle of the horizontal and vertical posts and feed all treads through it. See the pictures. This guarantees the thread will feed correctly.

Manual

I have learned the manual is mostly a refresher manual and not a teaching manual. Classes and supplemental books are wise moves.
