Terrorists and Doctrine

September 16, 2001

Muslim zealots use proof-texting of the Koran, just as Christian or Jewish zealots do to the Bible or any other zealot to their holy writings, to justify radical positions. Cults of all kinds do the same thing. The full solution to the terrorist situation will not come just from political, economic, and military actions. What must be included is for all religious leaders, including Islamic leaders, to make it clear to their peoples exactly what their scriptures really say. In other words, all religions must now intensify the teaching of Correct Doctrine. We are all, in a way, reaping the bad fruit of poor and sloppy doctrinal teaching. Even in New Testament times this was a major problem. (1 Tim 1:6-11 RSV) "Certain persons by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussion, {7} desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions. {8} Now we know that the law is good, if any one uses it lawfully, {9} understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, {10} immoral persons, sodomites, kidnapers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, {11} in accordance with the glorious gospel of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted." (Titus 2:1 RSV) "But as for you, teach what befits sound doctrine."

The call is to return to "sound doctrine" in all religions. Only then can there be constructive and cooperative relations between religious groups. This does not mean to force conversions between them but to establish levels of understanding and respect. Only then will the true messages lead the people.

Southern Baptists are particularly weak and disinterested about "sound doctrine" these days. This must change. In times of war, "sound doctrine" is vital. It is time to bring back the "old Baptist Training Union" as to method and function. It used the method that everyone participated in the study. There is no suitable substitute for that. Watching videos and hearing people talk can easily be negated by mentally turning one's mind to something else. Learning only comes from personal thinking. Nothing beats personal research and practice. Giving individual parts, as once was done, does not allow this option. We need to return to a form of Discipleship Training where every adult and young person has something to do in the training process. Until we do, we will continue to be part of the problem and not part of the solution. We will just continue to sit in training classes and wonder why all this is happening. Only True Doctrine Christianity will have salvation impact during this war.

It is the responsibility of every Christian to (2 Pet 3:18 RSV) "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen." This is an often-used verse but few realize the context for Peter’s statement he wrote in about A.D. 60. Note (2 Pet 3:15b-17 RSV) "So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, {16} speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. {17} You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men and lose your own stability." It was wrong doctrine and wrong teachings of doctrine that forced Peter to write of this. In the New Testament church, there were many teachers and learners of wrong (false) doctrine. This they used to justify twisted doctrine, which will lead to their destruction because the Father only accepts the Truth. Knowledge of Truth comes only from Correct Doctrine.
