HOWTO get your HP OfficeJet 5500 (USB) working under Fedora Core 3. Sun, 11 Sep 2005 15:46:02 -0400 -Todd Warner 1. use the normal methods to just get printing up and running. This step insures your printer is operational the easy way. a. printer is hooked up and plugged in b. Applications/System Settings/Printing c. set up your queue and test the printer d. shut down that application (system-config-printer) 2. install (as root - using up2date or yum or apt): hpoj libsane-hpoj xsane-gimp xsane gimp 3. run (as root): service hpoj setup chkconfig hpoj on service hpoj start 4. set up your printer again: a. "Applications"/"System Settings"/"Printing" b. click on printer queue c. click on "edit" d. click on "Queue type" e. select "ptal:/mlc:usb:officejog_5500_series hp officejet 5500 series" f. click on "Printer driver" and note that nothing will change. :) g. click "OK" h. click "Apply" i. exit out of that application 5. open up The GIMP and... a. click on "File"/"Acquire"/"XSane: Device dialog..." (xsane should crank up) 6. slap something on your scanner and click on "Scan". The image will land in The GIMP and you can edit to your hearts content and save the sucker. NOTE: you never hit the "SCAN" button on the scanner. That just causes the "all-in-one" device to make blinky lights and yell at you for not using it's non-linux software. :)
