Go van Gogh®

“I highly recommend this program. It touched upon all TEKS objectives in an exciting, fun, interesting, and informative way. Great activities led to great writing. Lots of connections were made across the curriculum. Thank you so much!”

Go van Gogh® brings the Dallas Museum of Art to Kindergarten through 6th grade students in schools throughout North Texas free of charge. Trained volunteers come to your school and lead experiences that encourage students to look closely at works of art, ask and answer questions, and make personal connections. All programs include hands-on activities that provide opportunities for individual creative expression. Students also receive information about the DMA's educational programming for the families. Below are some frequently asked questions about the program.

Where does Go van Gogh® go during the school year?
We offer two versions of school outreach with Go van Gogh® during the school year: programs for schools in Dallas and programs for schools outside of Dallas.

  • School Outreach in Dallas: Available to public and private schools, grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, within Dallas city limits.
  • School Outreach Outside Dallas: Satellite Outreach programs bring Go van Gogh® to schools and school districts or single campuses outside Dallas city limits. Entire school districts outside Dallas city limits may participate in the Go van Gogh® Satellite Outreach program. If you have any questions about Go van Gogh® satellite programs, please contact the Manager of Go van Gogh® and Community Teaching Programs, Amy Copeland, at acopeland@DMA.org.

Where does Go van Gogh® go during the summer?
During the summer, we bring Go van Gogh® into the community and offer programs for community organizations, such as Dallas Public Libraries, Dallas-area recreation centers, YMCAs, and Boys & Girls Clubs.

How much does it cost to have a Go van Gogh® visit?
Go van Gogh® is a FREE program offered by the Dallas Museum of Art. Schools and school districts within Dallas do not have to pay any fees whatsoever. Satellite schools or districts outside of Dallas city limits provide the volunteers and supplies for the art activities.

What program topics are available this year?
Go van Gogh® offers a variety of programs. Of these programs, five are one-hour long and one is expanded into ninety minutes. Each program is tailored to specific grade levels. Program content often dovetails with grade level and curricula and meets TEKS objectives. We also offer a program specifically for special education students. Only one program topic may be scheduled on a single day.

How many classrooms can Go van Gogh® visit at one time?
We can lead lessons in one to eight classrooms in a single morning. Classrooms may have no more than thirty students. Classes with more than one grade are encouraged to pick the program for the younger grade.

If you are scheduling for one to three classes, please schedule all programs at 9:30 or 10:30. If you are scheduling for four to eight classes, please schedule half the classes at 9:30 and half the classes at 10:30. For example, if you have four classes, please schedule two classes at 9:30 and two classes at 10:30.

What does the DMA provide for Go van Gogh® programs?

  • For School Outreach in Dallas: The DMA provides everything for the program, from art supplies to instructors.
  • For School Outreach Outside of Dallas: The DMA provides artwork images, program content, and training necessary to conduct outreach presentations. Satellite schools or districts must purchase required supplies and equipment necessary to complete the art activities for all programs. The Museum provides a list of necessary supplies for the art activities and names of suggested suppliers. For more information, please e-mail the Manager of Go van Gogh® and Community Teaching Programs, Amy Copeland, at acopeland@DMA.org.

How do I schedule a Go van Gogh® visit to my school in Dallas?
To schedule a visit, follow these four easy steps:

  • STEP 1: Determine five possible dates for your visit, double-checking test dates, holidays, class change times, and lunch schedules. If scheduling for other teachers at your school, confirm dates and start times with them before submitting your request.
  • STEP 2: Choose your program.
  • STEP 3: Fill out the corresponding Go van Gogh® Request Form at least four weeks before your requested program date.
  • STEP 4: Check your e-mail. You will receive e-mail confirmation of your scheduled date and time within approximately three to five business days of submitting your request form.

When are visits available?
In Dallas, visits are available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from September 22, 2015, through May 27, 2016. All school visits are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

What if I have a conflict with my program or need to cancel?
Programs cannot be shortened to accommodate conflicts such as lunch schedules or class change times. If changes occur to your visit after you submitted your Go van Gogh® Request Form, such as changed testing dates, number of classrooms or students, contact govangogh@DMA.org or call 214-922-1270 at least one week before your program date.

How should I prepare my classroom and students for their Go van Gogh® program?
One week before your scheduled Go van Gogh® program, additional confirmation materials will be sent to you to review and distribute to other scheduled teachers.
If possible, arrange desks in groups of four to five students each. This will aid in distributing art supplies during the program.
Teachers must remain in the classroom during the entire Go van Gogh® program.
If you are doing a Creative Connections program (90 minutes), teachers are required to lead activities provided by the DMA in advance of the program in their classroom.
